Brake and Clutch Piping: Bogus 2 Mini Rebuild

Connecting the goodridge steel braided brake hoses

Welcome to another instalment of our DIY Mini Restoration series! This guide, focuses on the crucial steps of installing the brake pipes, hoses, fluid and clutch on the Bogus 2 Mini build. If you need any technical advice or assistance, don’t hesitate to contact the Mini Sport team.

Brake System Installation

Using Goodridge Steel-Braided Hoses

For the brake lines, we've fitted Goodridge steel-braided hoses throughout. Goodridge offers both fixed and swivel end terminators, with the latter being more convenient as it prevents the need to twist the pipe to connect.

Running Brake Hose

We decided to route the brake hose along the exhaust tunnel, exiting just under the subframe and looping up to the T-piece for the rear brakes. This method allows for precise cutting and fitting of the hose end to the T-piece in situ.

Front Bulkhead Pass-Through

To maintain a neat and flush fit, we used a 90-degree bend when passing the brake hose through the front bulkhead under the dash. This setup requires an adapter to restart the hose on the other side, ensuring adequate thread length for locking off.

Brake Proportioning Valve

A Wilwood brake proportioning valve is mounted on the rear seat center support bracket. This valve, positioned out of the driver’s reach, adjusts the front-to-rear braking effect, which can vary with ride height and wheel size on road cars, and handling requirements on track cars.

Brake Fluid

We've chosen Millers Racing Brake Fluid 300 Plus, known for its reliability in competition. Be cautious with this fluid as it can damage paint. Avoid spills and dilute any accidental spillage with water immediately. Shop Our range of brake fluids >

Brake Servo and Vacuum Pipe

The original brake servo is retained, with a new petrol-tolerant vacuum pipe fitted to the 7-port head’s built-in inlet manifold. An inline non-return valve prevents petrol contamination of the servo's rubber diaphragm. Discover our range of brake parts >

Brake Light Switch

We kept the original brake light switch on the pedal box. It’s important to remove and reset this switch when fitting the clevis pin to the brake servo to avoid damage.

Engine Bay Plumbing

The front brake hoses are split at the top of the bulkhead and routed above the engine to each inner wing. This routing protects the braking system in case of a front-end collision. The long hoses to the servo allow for easy detachment of the brake piston without disconnecting the hoses.

Practical Tips:

  • Proper Tool Use: Always use the correct tools, especially when handling heavy components like the engine block.
  • Brake Hose Management: Do not attempt to run a brake hose through a panel, even with a grommet. Always use adapters.
  • Fluid Handling: Brake fluid can damage paint; handle with care and clean up any spills immediately.

Clutch Installation

Checking the Clutch Master Cylinder

The original clutch master cylinder was found unhealthy, indicated by black fluid and slight leaking. We opted for a new master cylinder, although repair kits are available for those on a budget or wanting to retain period parts. Shop replacement master cylinders >

Upgraded Clutch Master Cylinder

We used a later-type plastic reservoir clutch master cylinder for better leak prevention. A straight connector into the pre-Verto slave cylinder and a banjo connector to the master cylinder allow for a custom-length hose, which facilitates easy detachment of the slave cylinder
