In our ongoing DIY Mini restoration series, we’re excited to delve into the column and pedal box of the Bogus 2 Mini. This essential part of the build not only impacts performance but also enhances your driving comfort and control. Let’s explore the steps and considerations for creating the right position for you.
Revamping the Pedal Box
The original pedal box of the Bogus 2 has undergone a transformation, receiving a thorough clean and a fresh coat of paint. Mounted beside it is the impressive billet alloy throttle pedal from DSN Classics. Unlike the standard Mini throttle pedal—which is essentially just a bent bar that fits into two bracket holes—this precision pivot enhances the feel and smoothness of throttle operation. This upgrade makes a noticeable difference, especially during spirited driving.
One of the most common issues with the standard Mini steering column is the steep angle of the top support bracket. When seated in a sports bucket seat, which typically sits lower and further back, this angle can create discomfort and hinder control.
To remedy this, we’ve collaborated with Daniel from Mini Sport to design a super-rigid, fixed lowering bracket for the Bogus 2. This tailor-made bracket drops the column to a more comfortable height, allowing for a realistic driving position tailored to the driver’s preference in motorsport setups.
Strengthening the Assembly
Unlike the original column bracket, our custom bracket has been welded directly to the pedal box. This modification significantly stiffens and strengthens the assembly. To ensure proper alignment and avoid distortion of the dashrail, washers were added to compensate for the top of the pedal box bracket.
Connecting the Steering Column
With the pedal box securely bolted in, the next step is to connect the steering column to the rack. It’s essential to align the locating groove on the rack’s spline with the pinch bolt hole correctly. Once the bolt is secured and the column is attached to the bracket, you can then tighten the rack-mount U-bolts.
Here’s a glimpse of the beautifully finished bracket in place, expertly TIG welded.
Creating the right driving position in your Mini is crucial for both comfort and performance. By upgrading the pedal box and adjusting the steering column, you can significantly enhance your driving experience.
