When it comes to the Bogus 2 Mini restoration, every component has been carefully selected and meticulously installed to achieve peak performance while keeping the vehicle as light as possible. One of the standout features in this build is the custom dashboard and pod, which not only enhances the Mini’s functionality but also contributes to its sleek, lightweight design. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process, offering tips and insights along the way.
Creating a Custom Carbon Dash
The dashboard in the Bogus 2 is a masterpiece of engineering and craftsmanship. To fill the gaps in the bottom dash shelf, two carbon sheet plates were cut and installed. These plates, along with the central speedo hole in the front bulkhead, were sealed with carbon sheets, effectively closing off the engine bay. This was no simple task—cutting carbon sheet requires precision and care, using an air saw, protective gear, and a steady hand.

Smiths Clocks? Not Here... At the heart of the Bogus 2’s dash is the DigiDash 2 Lite from ETB Instruments. This advanced system comes equipped with everything needed for modern driving, including temperature and oil sensors, a speed sensor, and a dual oil pressure sensor. We also opted for additional features like a GPS lap timer and speed camera warnings, making it a highly versatile option compared to traditional multiple gauges.
When installing a digital dash like the DigiDash 2 Lite, ensure you follow the comprehensive wiring guide provided. To verify connections before finalising, we temporarily used a choc-block to test the system, which allowed us to troubleshoot before soldering the connections together. This extra step can save a lot of time and effort later on.
Customising the Speed Sensor
For the Bogus 2, we decided to use the existing worm-drive gearbox cable output with a Hall-effect sensor, requiring some recalibration. This custom approach is perfect for those who want to maintain certain original aspects of their Mini while upgrading to more modern technology.
Expert Tip:
Always use a suitable grommet to protect your wiring.
Precision Cutting for a Perfect Fit
Before making any cuts or drilling holes, it’s crucial to double-check measurements, especially when working with materials like carbon fibre. The lightweight carbon dash was custom-made, and we made sure to measure multiple times before making any permanent changes. The DigiDash 2 Lite pod is designed to be mounted on a flat panel, offering flexibility in positioning, which we took full advantage of.
Cutting carbon fibre requires finesse, as once it’s cut, there’s no going back. We found that cutting from the moulded side produced cleaner edges, which we then finished with a fine metal file. For anyone attempting a similar project, we recommend using a template to ensure all holes are correctly placed before making any cuts. The Finished Dashboard
The final product is a sleek, lightweight dashboard that not only looks incredible but also offers enhanced functionality. The DigiDash 2 Lite pod was placed centrally on the dash, ensuring it’s easily visible to most drivers, regardless of height. The carbon dash itself, while just one layer thick, is incredibly strong and durable—an excellent choice for those looking to reduce weight without sacrificing strength.
This custom dash was made specifically for the Bogus 2 project, however we stock a range of ready to install Mini Dashboards. Explore the Range >
Final Tips and Considerations
As you work on your own Mini’s dashboard, remember that careful planning and precision are key. Always use relays to reduce the electrical load on switches, and ensure that all wiring is secure and protected from potential damage. Also, keep in mind that carbon fibre is conductive—be mindful of potential short circuits when working with this material.
